Understanding ADR
More than an ordinary delivery
ADR is the agreement governing the international carriage of dangerous goods by road. Its requirements also underpin UK road transport rules for hazardous materials, helping protect people, property and the environment.
The requirements depend on the goods and quantities involved. Compliance means considering the whole consignment, not simply choosing a vehicle.
Labels & marks
Correct hazard labels and package markings identify the risks. These should match the classification of the goods being transported.
Vehicle standards
Vehicle suitability, equipment and any required markings must be considered for the particular load and applicable ADR rules.
Driver qualifications
Appropriate training is essential. Where an ADR driver certificate is required, it must cover the relevant goods and type of transport.

Dangerous goods questions
Can you carry every type of dangerous goods?
Please check with us before booking. Acceptance depends on the classification, quantity, packaging and transport requirements of your consignment. An ADR service should not be taken to mean that every hazardous material or load can be accepted.
What if I am not sure whether my goods are hazardous?
Check with the manufacturer or supplier. Where available, Section 14 of the safety data sheet provides transport information. Share this when enquiring, and do not assume that a familiar product or a small quantity is outside dangerous goods rules.
Do small quantities still need ADR checks?
Yes. Some loads may qualify for exemptions or reduced requirements, but this depends on the substance, quantity and packaging. Do not assume an exemption applies simply because the shipment is small.
Can I request an urgent hazardous goods collection?
Call 01512710121 with the load details and your deadline. We can discuss suitability and availability. Urgency does not remove the need for the appropriate compliance checks.

Clear information helps establish the right transport arrangements. Provide the following where applicable:
- UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class and packing group, supported by the safety data sheet if available.
- Quantity of goods, package count, packaging type, total weight and dimensions.
- Collection and delivery addresses, site contacts, access restrictions and loading facilities.
- Preferred collection date, delivery deadline and any special handling requirements.
